I think part of it is you're treating the east coast like it's one thing and it isn't. There's a big cultural difference between the north and south on this side of the country (we did fight a war against each other after all) and while southern states like Georgia and the Carolinas are indeed conservative, the northeast (which is where most people on the east coast live) is one of the most liberal parts of the country. Since this thread is really about Jodie Foster being a lesbian, it's worth noting that seven of the nine states that have legalized same-sex marriage are on the east coast, while there's only one on the west coast.

Also, Florida is kind of it's own thing. It's not really considered part of the east coast and it's neither truly conservative nor truly liberal. It's America's penis, and like a penis it swings.
