Remember when they used to make movies with no swearing or violence and actually told a story? Imagine an Ealing comedy crossed with The Italian Job and you get Hot Potato. Based upon true events where a back street Metal dealer comes across some uranium and tries to profit from it whilst being constantly double crossed and getting deeper into something he doesn't quite understand.
The period settings are well conceived for a low budget movie and it is well played by all. It is not an outstanding film but a great Sunday afternoon watch for all the family.
Jean Pierre Jeunet is at it again (Amelie, Delicatessen) in giving us kooky characters and situations but by now after watching so many of his films this set up is starting to wear a little thin and although the film is brilliantly shot the kookiness just grates too much for me personally and I would like to see him to step outside of this comfort zone.
However if you have never seen a Juenet film you will be blown away by his visual flair and eccentric comedy. A good film but not a great film.
What the hell did I just watch? Despite being a big Horror fan this was one film that I never got around to seeing until tonight. It's a Zombie action film with surrealism, philosophical musings with shots of black comedy and supernatural elements. Sounds confusing? It certainly is but there some moments of brilliance via it's set pieces and unusual camera angles.
Definitely one to watch again but whether I will enjoy it is another matter.
