i'm going to second this statement, particularly in light of the fact that it was your buddy explaining maynard james keenan's lyrics to you that ignited your desire to hunt down deeper meanings in songs. the lyrics in tool's songs have a lot of thought put into them, so much so that one could say they are designed to never give the listener a straight idea of what's being said. they're cryptic and mysterious and so on... i wouldn't approach all lyrics in this way, because most writers don't attempt writing songs that work to make you think for yourself.
