Misfits:

I suppose this is my big nuke em bomb on the whole list, so I think its important to state that I like the Misfits, but if there was ever a more over rated band in the history of hardcore & punk it has to be them.

The problem is that their image has far surpassed their musical legacy, which stems in part from a loyal, but yet often fanatical fan base, whose love for the band seems to stretch far beyond the music (A fascination with their appearance and cinematic movie lyrics.) Add to the fact that their distribution rights belong to a major label that's been able to easily market them over the years.

I am however soley concerned with the music, and the Misfits greatness is a very small window indeed, spanning from the Beware Ep to the release of their first album Walk Among Us. Prior to that point, with the exception of Glenn Danzig, the band is musically atrocious. This may be a hard pill for Misfits fans to swallow, but their early stuff sounds like my high school jam band, the guitar & bass playing is so talentless that they make Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols look like Jimmy Page. I mean it's embarrassing when you compare the guitar work to other notable hardcore bands like the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag & Bad Brains. There is only one reason that their early work is listenable, and that reason is Glenn Danzig. I would argue that he is vocally gifted, and the best thing he ever did was leave The Misfits.

I could only imagine the outrage of diehard Misfits fans after they read this, but I would challenge them to find an early Misfits song that is better than Mother, or a Misfits album better than How the gods kill... it's not going to happen. It's nice that Jerry Only finally learned to play and reunited the Misfits, unfortunately playing without Danzig is like reuniting the Dead Kennedys without Jello Biafra...not really the same band.
