How are you with making music in general, do you play any instruments, do you know any music theory? Not that it is essential but it does help if you've got a bit of grounding.

There are lots of programs that big names use. You might want to look at things like FruityLoops, Propellerhead Reason and Cubase. Reason is great because it won't take up too much of your CPU but it takes a bit of know-how to craft a really sexy sounding mix. To be honest, that's true with all of these programs and I haven't used Reason since 3.5 (it's like 6 now?) but there are so many tutorials and places online to help you out with crafting a nice sounding track.
