I guess growing up I was isolated from my peers and told how weird I was. Eventually I embraced that and thought fuck you, so what if I'm weird there are plenty of other freaks and everyone else is an ass-hole. I guess much later I realised that I was just voluntarily isolated which had much the same effect. Finally I stopped caring what other people thought about me and just got on with my life. You can find common ground with people across all strata just as often as you can find ass-holes.
