Electronic music had been big in the UK & Europe for over 20 years at that point and the 90s was full of British rock bands crossing over with electronic artists, Hell ever Oasis got involved with it. America never really seemed to warm to electronica in the 70s & 80s other than underground stuff like Chicago House music & Acid House and stuff like that and there was very little happening there in the 90s either.
I think if it was a risk it would be how their American audience would adapt to it rather than their fanbase as a whole.
