No, they're just cerberal and visceral artists. A lot of fans don't understand Tool and still find them appealing. You don't have to understand anything. More like just shut up and experience them. :P

I don't know if you're referring also to Tool. I agree they were pretty angsty at the beginning (though not for the sake of being angsty). But I don't think they're marketed at any sort of audience. *shrug*
They've considerably evolved through their timeline in my opinion.
