SYL are a hard band to label because it starts a **** fit. Point out that SYL uses dynamics to emphasize heaviness like your average Nu Metal outfit, and people flip the **** out 'cuz oh my god, the nu-metal tag gives you aids. They aren't "alternative metal", 'cuz, well, in my opinion that's just a high highfalutin way of saying nu metal.
Now, in the late 90s or what have you SYL were obviously not metalcore. But what about since that genre blew up and popular bands of the genre began using dynamics such like nu metal bands did?
So, yeah. Metalcore.
