Ive said this before, but I don't base my fondness for a band solely based on how much talent they have, if I did I wouldn't like A Day To Remember as much as I do. I lot of post/metalcore bands can right some really catching songs when they put their minds to it (ADTR comes to mind again, they may not be the most talented band ever, but they just know how to... errr... improvise I guess you could say. They just know how to use what they can to make a good song)
A band can be talented without being super technical. Your right, it does take some talent to make catchy songs. Talent can be measured by a number of factors, catchiness included. However, IMO, serious talent comes through when a band is able to make challenging, unique music that still engages the listener. These attributes are rarely present in metalcore.
