The big difference between Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon (for me at least) is the way you put time in them. For Harvest Moon you set out in the morning with a plan of what you want to do and spend all your time following through with that plan. Animal Crossing is almost like a daily routine. You run around digging up the day's buried items, catching some fish and insects, talking to the villagers and edging your way towards whatever you're next going to spend money on. I greatly prefer AC for that reason but I guess it depends on whether you want to sink hours every day into your addiction of just get a fix from it every now and then.
