That is right. However, the times have changed. Artists like Radiohead and Amanda Palmer discover new forms of creating value. It is way more important to make people go to a concert than make them buy the records.
The popularity of online music grows - but for the reason that it is more and more for free: in order to reach new listeners and motivate more people to visit concerts which is the main source of income for the artists.
