I've done it five times in my life. Its always the same. Its hard to let go, but its best for the pet. You never really understand the true joy they bring you in life until you're crying your eyes out. Sounds like he lived a great life.
Sunset Beach is a godsend for surf fishing. Caught several fish, most of em throwbacks but had a hell of a good time.
