It didn't sound anything like what I was expecting either. I got the impression PJ Harvey was some grizzled veteran singer songwriter in the mould of Bob Dylan or Nick Cave, but this album was far more indie-pop than what I had anticipated. (I hadn't listened to any of her stuff before)
The songs were catchy and melody driven, didn't care much for the concept but the music was fun and I can see repeat listens on the horizon.

It's never too late. If you really like that album that much you should definitely explore her discography. You don't get the same PJ Harvey album twice so you've got the raw alternative rock of
Dry, the pop-rock of
Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, the folky
White Chalk and they're just three examples.
