Cruise and/or paddle controls were designed for older people initially. They also were designed for long road trips. Its nice to be able to stretch your legs when you've been driving for endless hours all while driving with your hands. Personally i've never used a cruise control. I have it on my truck but i'd never use it. I have primarily driven manuals my entire life, but once I bought a 4 wheel drive truck there was no looking back.
