Inner city public transport in Melbourne is fine. So if you live in the city, you have no problems - there's busses, trams and trains galore. But the thing with Melbourne is that it has a huge 'urban sprawl' - most residents of Melbourne do not live in the CBD. Depending on which suburb you live in, public transport can be sucky. I used to live in the inner East and it was OK, and in the inner North it was really great as well. Now I live in the outer East and public transport is sucky; I just drive everywhere.
I always find other cities weird because you drive for an hour out of the city and you're in the middle of nowhere. In Melbourne, you drive for an hour and you're still in what would be considered Melbourne. I guess that's part of the problem.
