It's not must to learn music theory if you want to compose, but I can't see what harm it could make for your creativity.
Also, those famous songwriters, Paul Mccartney and etc, are/were so highly talented so it does not matter if they know anything about theory.
So if you want to learn music theory, that's all right and if you don't want, that's all right too. It's your choice.
