You really don't have to play the first game to be able to get into the second. It might make the lore make a little more sense, but honestly I've gotten by pretty well so far without it. Plus you can always just read the Wiki. As for combat, apparently it underwent a huge overhaul to streamline it (not dissimilar to
Dragon Age 2 ironically) so you can get through by mashing the attack button while occasionally remembering to block and dodge out of the way. Definitely worth the $20 it currently costs on Steam.
