Seeing as we're mentioning the BBC Radiophonic Workshop I think I should post this.
In 1972 Malcolm Clarke was commissioned to score a Doctor Who story called The Sea Devils.
He ended up doing a totally experimental score on an EMS synthi 100 and amazingly the Doctor Who producers went with it.

Blows my mind to think something so avant garde was broadcast on a kids TV show on prime time TV over 40 years ago.
