I could literally sense that the nervous twitch throughout the show. It almost seemed like he let out a sigh of relief when Anthony Kiedis popped out on stage. I would definitely consider it awkward. Granted i'm no Mars fan, but I have seen him perform alot better under less stress of the big game.
