The thing that gets me is how they manage to give the Joker motivations that you kind of have to agree with at least just a little bit that make him seem almost human, and yet he's still quite possibly the only ever truly successful villain who is just evil for the sake of being evil. How Alan Moore pulled that off I have no idea.
