Aw man, that's a great review: too bad we didn't get to see it last year. That being said, I don't think
Carcass would be considered that representative of melodic death metal in the modern sense because they don't use any clean singing: the melodies are in the guitar harmonies, but that normally isn't enough of a qualification.
That being said, if you want to hear examples of melodic death metal that actually do go into great "melodic" territory, you should check out any of the following records:
