Also, if possible, start singing before you learn to play guitar or piano. Because its so easy to find your notes on the guitar/piano it somehow seems to mess up your ability to sing in tune once you start singing.
Well, maybe its not as severe as that, but I'd say that guitar and piano are the two instruments which least prepare you to learn singing - they're pretty much the furthest removed instruments from the voice in terms of technique.
