The whole 'code of honor' thing is overrated. And I think that it is the main thing which can make people like samurais.
Plus, being a samurai was mostly an hereditary status so I can't help but think that most of them were just spoiled kids with the right of carrying swords.
On the other head, we don't know much about ninjas...
