West is definitely the way to go in terms of landscape. Not that there aren't beautiful things to see in the east, it's just the landscapes in the west are so big. Death Valley, for example, is one of my favorite places. Some pictures I took there a few years ago:
The white you see on the ground here is salt, and the temperature was about 35 C, while as you can see, there was still snow up in the mountains in the background.
The view looking down on that same area.
Volcanic ash several miles north, still part of Death Valley though.
