I'd go for Portrait as my favourite, though Holy Wood and Mechanical Animals are contenders. They were actually a pretty exciting band in the 90s, stirring things up and causing controversy. Obviously MM is a clever guy and knew exactly what he was doing, I mean calling an album "Antichrist Superstar"? Best marketing move ever.
I know Smells Like Children doesn't count as an album as such but the two opening tracks on there are probably my favourite MM moment. I didn't even realise that Diary of a Dope Fiend was a reworking of an older song at the time so when I got the first album and heard Dope Hat I was totally surprised. So great to hear songs reworked in an interesting way rather than just another dull remix album.
When Eat Me Drink Me came out I bought it and put in on and heard If I Was Your Vampire and thought we were in for AS Part 2...but it wasn't to be. Still some good songs on that album though.
