i'm a huge fan of tribal tech - if you're coming into jazz from a fairly rocky/grungy perspective (as i have and am) they're an incredible introduction to jazz fusion - the diversity and colour of jazz backed up by the raw power of rock. scott henderson (their guitarist) is now one of my favourites. i can also vouch for the goodness of miles davis, herbie hanc0ck and pat metheny. but i think boris jawaka above knows what he's talking about

Edit: But of course, how could i forget Weather Report! Thanks Music Man. I have "Heavy Weather" which is great.
