It does not take an extended amount of time for something to become a classic. There are albums that came out in 2010 and 2000 that I would call a classic today.

What makes something iconic is the groundbreaking impact. This can take place at any time.

When Michael Jackson did the Moonwalk for the first time on Motown 25, that was Iconic even then during its time.

The NEXT day after that special, people called it Iconic even back then.

The white glove, the white socks, the black loafers, the fedora, the glitter jacket, the moonwalk, the kick, etc its all Iconic because of that one moment where we witnessed that iconic performance that defined him as a solo artist seperate from his brothers.

When an event, album or song can reasonates with audiences at a certain period and defines a certain era of music/time, it is iconic.

The instant classic is a rare thing, and it's usually just a term used to describe a wildly popular album that could easily fade into obscurity in the future.
I disagree

There are albums and songs that are not as wildly known that are still consider "classics".

Classics are simply "timeless" songs. Timeless in meaning, they can still play on a contemporary/modern radio and people will still enjoy it. These are songs that don't sound like the era they were created and could easily play on a contemporary radio and still be enjoyed by contemporary music listerners.

There are ton of songs that have been instant classics.

I also disagree on how you define icon, because that is definitely linked to popularity
That is not necessarily true.

Just because a singer is a pop star does not automatically make them an "Icon"

An Icon is an artist who has made iconic albums, performances, events etc. Once again, it has nothing to do with popularity specifically and more so to do with the impact a product or event has made on audiences. The significance of the impact and how it affects audiences is what makes an artist iconic, or a song iconic, a music video iconic or an "iconic moment". The song, event, performance etc defines the artist based off that impact.

because people like Michael Jackson or Madonna brought little innovation to music but their status as a pop star and maintained image in the public eye gave them their pop icon status.
Come on boo, you know this is straight B.S.

You playing right???

How could anybody answer this question, and how could you assume that this music won't be played fifty years from now?
Because the songs are generic and have no lasting impact.

There is no timeless or classic component to how these pop songs are created today. The songs out today are similiar to fast food. They are only good for quick popular hits of today but they have no lasting impact.
