Doctor Who has always been aimed as a family show rather than a kids show.
The Sarah Jane Adventures is written for kids and I would argue it's better written and has a lot of ideas better than Doctor Who itself.

Fair enough but the head writer and showrunner does consider children to be the main audience, ironically he also wrote some of the darker episodes and my personal favourite "The Girl in the Fireplace". Two/Three decades ago children watched Animals of Farthing wood, Watership Down and even Plague Dogs (PG13) I don't think a dustbin on wheels is really pushing the boundaries.
