I am in no way implying Van Halen were not big but you have to look at the year of the releases and put them in perspective.
If MJ released the Thriller album in November of 1982, of course Van Halen would have had the biggest tour act that year because MJ did not go on tour and had just released his album.
By the time the Thriller album was released and took off we all can agree MJ was WAYYYY bigger than them. MJ did not tour for Thriller till 84 which broke all kinds of records and was more successful than any of Van Halens tours.
