With many artists I'm not aware how popular or unknown they are though, I don't pay much attention to popularity most of the time, since I usually just look up a discography and start getting the studio albums.

Mainstream is sort of this, well, broad term really. Other artists or bands that individual people consider non-mainstream, could be an mainstream artist or band in the mind of another person, vice versa...
