At my office, one of the songs on the hold music is "Mean" by Taylor Swift. It's catchy throwaway pop, but it's remarkable to me for two reasons.
- It's the first country song I've ever heard where the small town people are the bad guys and the people "living in a big ol' city" are the good guys. Really shocking!
- The big crime the "mean" character in the song seems to have committed is saying that Taylor Swift can't sing. Swift, in retaliation, writes a hit song where she calls this guy "a liar and pathetic and alone in life and mean". Which one of these people do you think is meaner?
