B52s and Funkadelic?

They are very much alike in that they both improvised heavily, did long extended jams, and blended lots of genres like rock, folk, bluegrass, funk, psychedelia, and blues. Heck, Phish started out playing a ton of Dead in their shows.

Biggest difference between them is that Phish are/were all around better musician's and had more modern inspirations to draw from.
