Back in the day of vinyl records and no internet, lots of people were just SOL. If you didn't know anybody who owned or had heard a particular record, buying it was a "hit or miss" proposition. Many stores back then didn't offer the capability of previewing a recording with headphones. Nowadays it's the norm.

Yeah, although lots of record stores do have listening stations.
The internet and artist websites do give the nice option of checking outa track, and I heard that Napster lets you listen to entire tracks before buying them. I think its some type of subscription concept.
