As time goes on, I learn to appreciate both harder and softer music. When I first started listening to music seriously, I had a small range. I was listening to somewhat energetic rock music but couldn't do anything heavier like metal, or anything softer like folk.
But, eventually, my musical taste expanded in both directions, so now I can listen to a full of hell album and a fleet foxes album in the same day.
I see no reason why listening to harder music excludes softer music.
