See, I agree with you, yes it might have been better received to the masses the the love story was the main focal point. But for me, I am able to see a love story that transcends time, and encompasses not only the love the protagonists shared but also the creators love for us, as intelligent and spiritual beings, and that for me was represented beautiful with his relationship with the tree, and through the gorgeous visuals through out the movie.

If you dumb down the plot so that any moron can grasp it, you are doing the movie's incredible disservice.
