Default John Mayer as a personality

After years of listening to John Mayer's music, a question was created as far as how John Mayer uses his 'image', his personality and I would appreciate any kind of feedback.

To begin with, John Mayer is represented by himself as the artist who solely cares about his music, who knew from a young age that he was going to 'make it', as seen through the documentary "Some day I'll fly". What this does is that it creates an image of him in his listeners' minds as a 'dream catcher', the man who can do anything. What he has achieved is by no means little, but would it be fair to consider that this was the plan all along?

What is truly genius in his way of working though, is that through his lyrics and the situations which are described in his songs, the listener can on a number of occasions relate to the song's persona. Listeners can say 'This song is about me' - 'This song is referring to my situation'. Thus, the listeners create in their minds the illusion of having a special bond with the artist that no one else has, which results in the bond being identical amongst the listeners, but unique from the listener's perspective.

Any comment or opinion is welcome.
