Disclaimer: I'm drunk and getting more drunker, so if I'm slightly incoherent please feel free to give me a, "Dude, what the **** are you talking about?" Not an excuse for douchiness, just confusion.

However Batlord, I think that I do listen to a lot of generic bands, you're right there. Part of me is a bit intimidated to branch out more than I have in to other kinds of music, there's so much out there. I should get over that though, because I do agree with you that I need to develop my taste, because it is flawed to hell. I know I usually don't comment on rec's people give me, but PM me a bunch of bands man, I do listen to everything people suggest. I came to this forum to develop my taste.

So help me along, everyone!
I'd love to give you recs, but I don't really know your tastes beyond what I said. Do you want death metal, thrash metal, black metal, doom metal, etc? Just giving you a crash course in all forms of metal would be an essay of epic length. From your digging of more trad mainstream rock and metal I'd say thrash and trad metal (Priest, Maiden, etc) would be good, but some specificity would be good. I gotta have something to start with before I move on to other forms, so some specifics would be good.

I actually like Bush as a singles band. I don't think much of them creatively, but I was just including them as an example of my greater point.

I haven't read through much that's been posted save for my drunken ramblings from last night, and I'm only posting this because I've already plastered my diluted thoughts all over this thread, and just want to clarify, or rather do this the 'correct' way with a clearer head. This is in no way a retaliation against you Batlord at all, these are just my true thoughts about your "Taste" in music (since you're the one that pulled me into this) that I would otherwise just internalize. I don't feel the need to judge other peoples thought processes, or judge what they're most passionate about, because that's what makes them who they are.
I was taking the piss with the fogie comment, and honestly thought you'd take it in stride, but if you just don't want me to call you one that's fine. I wasn't even criticizing your taste, just saying that I'd like it if you could rap with some people about music you don't seem to be familiar with yet. You introduced me to (liking) Rush, which I'm truly grateful for, but I'd like to return the favor. It's just hard to know what to talk to you about since you mostly post about bands that you seem to dig already without giving much info about what you might like to explore.

Batlord: Very myopic and juvenile, and a lack of any real understanding of what you're actually listening to. Like a bully on a playground, you mock and ridicule anyone who thinks differently than you, and it really shows your low self esteem. Sure, metal and all it's offshoot genres can be entertaining and pleasing to the ear at times, but I feel you try a bit too hard to come across as someone who is "Hardcore" and you miss out on the real beauty of the music you refuse to except, which probably stems from having a fear of intimacy, and I'm about as impressed with the vastness of your musical catalog as I am with someone who has 20 guitars but can't play any of them. You're young, and indeed still have something to prove, so I can understand this, and it really showed some progress to me that you excepted Rush wholeheartedly. I got an even bigger kick out of you freaking out about Praxis, since that's a genre you wouldn't normally seek out. You're musical taste is really right on par with someone your age. Not beyond, not below, but right there at the fulcrum point with which one starts to grow into who they will become for the rest of their life.
Definitely still in the learning stage of my musical education, but a lot of my arrogant postings about mocking this or that is generally tongue in cheek. Yes, I haven't been that big on prog, but most of my invective about it is just to get under TH's skin, which is just supposed to be friendly jabs. You will notice however that I often admit to not being an expert on anything. I like to think I have a good handle on thrash, but even things like death and black metal I'm not that much of an expert on. I've had limited money and limited internet access, that's hampered my ability to listen to everything I'd like to, even in metal. My arrogance on the subject is just a persona for yucks. My Batcave journal is just a caricature, not a declaration of supremacy.

I legitimately appreciate Plankton's post right here, because it clears the air about what someone thinks of my taste, rather than people just saying that I'm some kind of metal expert, which a bunch of people seem take seriously. More people should understand that I'm intentionally full of ****. Unless otherwise stated, just assume I'm being goofy, no matter how insulting.

And I really don't want to have some silly feud with you. You're one of my fav people on here. I know that even the best of friends are going to have negative opinions of one another, but that doesn't mean they can't voice them without having a falling out.

Did it piss you off that I liked the song you didn't think I would so you had to spoil it by picking out a bad one? What did that prove? That you really didn't want me to like it in the first place, maybe so you could poke fun and tell me how I refuse to broaden my musical taste? Don't get it.
No, my point was that since you like prog, an experimental rock genre, I felt that you would dig a lot of stuff that you seem to ignore just because it's associated with a different kind of music fan. When I think of Can or Glenn Branca fans, I think of old school alternative/post punk/art rock fans, whose opinions I don't imagine you take much stock in just because of how much music they like that you probably can't stand.

But those tracks seemed like they would be right up your alley, just not something in your "musical world" just by virtue of the kinds of fans that they attracted rather than your actual musical taste. I really thought that first Glenn Branca track would impress you, but like I said, I don't think everything of his would be your cup of tea. The second Branca song I posted was just to see if my suspicions were correct. I'd love to see you listen to more of him, but I was just warning you.

Sorry, but I don't think anybody who isn't a metalhead has much bad to say about your music taste.

I like this idea. Maybe once every day of the weekend. All day for those who want to, with an emphasis on certain times for those who only want to do it for a certain amount of time while still having a community experience. I keep meaning to plug more, but I keep forgetting to.

No. You listed the Offspring and Disturbed. I dig some Offspring and Disturbed. But to mention them in a short list of your fav bands requires mockery. Deal with it.

This really was my intent for the thread. There's so much "You have such great taste, I want to jerk you off just so your taste will squirt all over me", that I think more honest opinions just aren't expressed, and I like the idea of a more open environment for opinions. The whole point of a music forum is for discussion, not JUST camaraderie. A little trolly fun is just a bonus.
