If by "bad coloring book" you mean the coloring book of a child prodigy then yes. The dreamlike atmosphere and attention to detail made the game far more immersive than any previous Mario game, which were visually charming, but ultimately never felt like they took place in living, breathing worlds.
Donkey Kong looked cool, but it still looked like CGI claymation.
