I agree with everything you said. I love 10,000 Days and loved it even more when I noticed the relevance to a few songs pertaining to 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's no Lateralus by any means but it shouldn't be and I love every minute of it. Maynard had to turn his Mother into an angel for homage.
