2 different markets. The addition of McVie/Buckingham/Nicks brought them into a more marketable category with a softer more radio friendly sound, appealing to the other half of the world audience, which would be the female population. Your reasoning that the former is better is simply because you're genetically programmed to think along those lines since you're (I'm guessing) male.
Put those two songs in a women only survey, and a majority of the percentage will favor the Nicks tune, whereas the outcome would be the opposite for an all male survey.
