Another thing to remember is that Fleetwood Mac wasn't the only band taming down a harder edged sound to be more accessible to a mass market in the second half of the 70s. Back then it seemed like everyone was doing it. The Doobie Brothers, Supertramp, Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, and others tailored their music for the then booming and lucrative AOR FM radio format.
