Ive never played Minecraft but i agree with what you said about Terraria.
From watching playthroughs and having friends that played Minecraft it looks like building stuff in Minecraft is alot more time consuming than in Terraria and players are tempted to make a whole town and spend hours building stuff where as in Terraria is more adventure oriented and since it's in 2d i think it makes for a better platformer game.
Before buying Terraria i almost bought Minecraft but i figured Terraria would be less time consuming and a compressed 2d version of Minecraft but the game ended up being alot more than that.
It reminds me of playing an Nes game with modern sim elements and a spelunking theme.
