God I hate to be "that" person but...

I think our individual bioresonance frequencies determine this, in conjunction with sociological factors, of course. Our bodies constantly seek balance, and various energetic wavelengths can be very powerful in this regard (think: far infrared lamps used on newborn babies... Or google "brown sound" for a real $h!+ kicker... Musical wavelengths are no different).

I read once that teenagers are generally drawn to rap, and certain rock and pop beats, because the heavy bass resembles sounds from their mothers' wombs, which apparently they find subconsciously soothing during a relatively tumultuous age...

Interesting theory, even if you're not the hippie dippie type.
