Basically it's back to the basics, which would be using military tactics to propagate the religion of islam, because in islam some hold a belief that a military victory is a sign from allah that they are right.

As far I as read the current radical and militaristic form of islam has started with either the teaching of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab or Sayyid Qutb, different sources claim either as beginning. The former is responsible for what is called "Wahhabism," but since that make it seem like a muslim would be following a person they do not like the name, so Salafism is preferred. Now some say Wahhabism is the same as Salafism and other disagree. There is no consensus. But no matter what it is called, it is a current radical and militaristic threat. And is usually a threat in the third world nations where not much attention is given to the victims radical and militaristic branch/brand of islam.

Talking about islam is like opening Pandora's box. There are all these divergent groups, and contradictions within islam and contradictory view points outside of islam. As far a topic/discussion islam/militaristic islam isn't something I like to get into.
