Blew out a disc about 10 years ago. Ended up with severe sciatica becasue of it. Wanna know what it feels like? Take your middle finger and bend it back until you can't take the pain any longer. Now imagine that feeling over your entire lower back - ALL THE TIME.
Took tons of icing and a few weeks of intense PT (ultrasonic massages are the bomb) before I got relief.
Here's a great way to ice (my PT showed me this). You'll need a coffee table. Lay on the floor with the ice pack under your back and your lower legs resting up on the coffee table. This allows the cold to really penetrate deep.
Do that 15 minutes every hour for an afternoon and you should start feeling some relief.
