As far as I know, if you check yourself in, you can check yourself out. But if a uniformed cop checks you in, they're going to hold you for at least 3-5 days.

So, if a civilian cop stops someone from jumping off a bridge, you don't say good job or whatever? The next step is that person is going to be taken to the hospital and checked in. I'm not exactly proud of dragging him across the pavement (he was still standing). But what's done is done.
