The "hardcore" is not a reference to "metal." I can't speak for the hardcore musician and say either way what was and wasn't an influence. But Hardcore Punk was pretty much the opposite of the day-glo Metal bands of the 80s that relied heavily on hairspray and make-up and wearing spandex
etc and would do anything to sign a contract with a major record label & be seen on MTV.
