I've been looking at my CDs/records, and find that the American editions tend to have a copyright notice in the form of "All rights reserved. Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws", while the British version nearly always has (with some amendments based on the label) "All rights of the producer and the owner of the work reproduced reserved. Unauthorised copying, public performance and rental of this record prohibited". What causes this difference? Does the American version tend to fit the laws better there("applicable" could exclude prohibition of personal duplication due to the law being less strict in America than the UK on copying), do the RIAA and BPI suggest different messages, or is there another reason?
