Outside of metal it seems better. Roxy Music's Viva! is one of their best albums. Heard other good live albums too, but the stigma is hard to get around so I avoid them on instinct.

Peter Gabriel - Plays Live
King Crimson - USA
Bob Dylan - Hard Rain
Talking Heads - The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads
Miles Davis - Dark Magus
Not all of these would be to TH's taste, but I'm trying to make the point that reviewing live albums is pretty valid.
